The best Wadi Rum experience: camping & jeep tour with the Bedouins

The best way to experience Wadi Rum is by camping with the Bedouins and do a guided jeep tour. Mostly the Bedouins offer a jeep tour first followed by a one night stay at the camp. But I asked to do it in reverse order, which was no problem at all. Later I found out that was actually a smart decision. Since Jordan is one of the poorest water countries in the world and you are at the desert, the amount of water in the showers at the camp wasn’t much. After a long day of exploring in the desert, you really long for a shower to wash off all the sunscreen, dust and sand. So I was glad I could shower at the hotel in Aqaba after the desert tour. I really enjoyed my stay with the Bedouins. Here is what my experience was like!

Arrival

I arrived around 3.30 pm at the camp, after a short stop at the main office of the camp at Wadi Rum Village. You have to leave your car there and one of the Bedouin guides takes you to the camp with his personal jeep. The drive to the camp was very amusing since our driver was really nice and funny. He showed our tent and left us all alone in the camp. There was no one else except for a guy working in the kitchen. But actually it was quite nice to sit there alone with my travel buddy having a nice conversation. There is no wifi in the desert so there were no distractions. I put my stuff in the tent which was actually quite comfortable with two beds and it even had a light!

Dinner

I sat outside in front of the common tent, where dinner took place later that day, with the most amazing view on the desert, watching the jeeps passing by and waiting for the sunset. Around 6.30 pm other people started to arrive after their jeep tour. The Bedouin guides started to make a fire in a hole in the ground. Apparently they prepare their meat in the ground, which is quite cool to see! While the food was prepared, we got a lot of Bedouin tea.

Inside the common tent they offered a buffet dinner with soup, bread, vegetables, rice and different choices of meat like lamb and chicken. The food was really good. Afterwards we all sat around the camp fire listening to the Bedouins playing music and singing songs. There even was a little dancing!

Sleep

Then it was time to sleep. The bath rooms were very clean and a lot of soap and tissues were available for use. It was fun to stand there brushing my teeth next to the other women. I had some pleasant conversations there!

Even though the bed was quite comfortable, I didn’t sleep much that night due to a sand storm that passed by, the snoring men all around me and later the addition of the sound of the pouring rain. Luckily the next morning the rain and sand storm had stopped.

After breakfast in the common tent I got picked up by a jeep back to the Wadi Rum Village office, where my private jeep tour would start.

Wadi Rum Jeep Tour

The jeep tour is the ultimate Wadi Rum desert experience! You’ll sit outside in the back of the jeep while driving through the massive desert. I did the full day jeep tour and saw a lot of different things such as Bedouin inscriptions, canyons, rock arches, massive rock formations in different colors, sand dunes and a LOT of sand and rocks! It feels as if you’re driving around on Mars. You also stop at Bedouin tents to get some tea. Even my warm lunch was freshly made by my guide! I’m going to let the pictures speak for themselves, because no words can describe the beauty of Wadi Rum:

Which tour company did you go with for Wadi Rum?
I’m usually a solo traveler, so hoping that the guide can also take photos (or else, I’ll have to bring a timed tripod with the camera which is a bit of a pain).

You can find hotel/camp info here: https://www.worldwanderista.com/jordan-road-trip-itinerary-guide/ where you stay is also the tour organisor
I travel solo 95% of my travels. So most of my photos are made with a tripod. I am used to it. You can see more of them on my instagram: http://www.instagram.com/worldwanderista
